Inside the Legislative Process: My Journey with AFP in Tallahassee

Some experiences give you a new perspective on how things really work behind the scenes. My recent trip to Tallahassee with Americans for Prosperity (AFP) was exactly that—a front-row seat to how policy, advocacy, and real relationships shape the future of our economy, our rights, and yes, even AI.

And for the record? This was the first time I had fun in Tallahassee and didn’t leave a piece of my liver behind. Progress, people. Progress.

AFP: More Than Just a Name in Politics

If you’ve never heard of Americans for Prosperity (AFP) before, here’s the short version: they’re a grassroots powerhouse dedicated to advancing free-market policies, limited government, and individual freedom. Unlike the typical Washington lobbying machine, AFP operates at a local level, connecting directly with lawmakers and ensuring that real people—not special interests—shape policy.

What struck me most? AFP isn’t just showing up for press releases and photo ops—they have real relationships with legislators. In an era where so much political engagement feels performative, this was refreshing.

Meeting the Legislators Shaping Florida’s Future

During the Freedom Tour, I had the opportunity to meet with several state representatives who are working on policies that directly impact economic freedom, education, and innovation—including AI policy (which, let’s be real, is a subject near and dear to my heart).

Rep. Mike Giallombardo: A Champion of Smart AI & Economic Growth

One of the most compelling discussions came from Rep. Mike Giallombardo, who was recognized as an AFP Legislative Champion for his leadership in pro-growth policies, fiscal responsibility, and regulatory reform. What stood out? His pragmatic approach to AI regulation.

Rather than rushing to overregulate a technology that is still evolving, Rep. Giallombardo and his colleagues are taking a wait-and-see approach—watching how AI develops before jumping in with unnecessary restrictions. This is exactly the kind of common-sense approach we need. SAFE AI, not stifled AI.

This matters because AI-savvy candidates will get my vote. The future belongs to those who understand and leverage AI—not those trying to ban or suffocate it with excessive bureaucracy.

Senator John Martin: Fiscal Responsibility & Criminal Justice Reform

At Senator John Martin’s office, we got an inside look at how his team is working on budget efficiency, reducing government waste, and criminal justice reform. With his background as a former prosecutor turned private attorney, he understands the delicate balance between public safety and smart, data-driven justice reforms.

He’s one of those rare policymakers who actually gets how to apply logic to lawmaking instead of just throwing money at problems and hoping they disappear. Which, let’s be honest, is refreshing.

Rep. Lauren Melo: Workforce Development & Free-Market Solutions

Another standout conversation was with Rep. Lauren Melo, who is laser-focused on workforce development—particularly expanding pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs to create alternative career pathways beyond traditional four-year degrees.

She also touched on public safety and law enforcement partnerships, emphasizing that economic stability and individual rights should not be mutually exclusive. And in a move that aligns with AFP’s vision, she is pushing for merit-based policies that promote fairness and opportunity without government-imposed mandates like DEI requirements.

AI, Innovation, and the Future of Policy

One of the biggest wins for me personally? AI was part of the conversation. Many of the representatives we met understand the impact AI will have on the economy, workforce, and daily life—and they’re already thinking about how to leverage it for efficiency instead of fearing it.

This is exactly the mindset we need from policymakers: Adapt. Learn. Innovate. AI isn’t some dystopian threat—it’s a tool that can supercharge productivity, streamline government processes, and empower individuals.

Those who understand this will lead. Those who don’t? Well, they’ll be left behind.

Final Thoughts: Why This Trip Mattered

This trip reinforced something I already believed: if you want change, you have to be part of the conversation. Watching AFP operate from the inside gave me a renewed appreciation for their work. They’re not just advocating for policy—they’re building relationships, fostering dialogue, and creating real impact.

For those of us passionate about AI, innovation, and economic freedom, we need to support the policymakers who get it. The future is coming fast, and those who embrace it intelligently will lead.

As for me? I’m just getting started.
